Seamus O'Dowd

Seamus O’Dowd (6th Dan SKIF) has been a student of Martial Arts for thirty years, and has trained with many of the top instructors of Shotokan Karate in the world. He is an occasional contributor to a number of Martial Arts magazines, and produced a number of DVDs, including one entitled “Kanazawa No Bo” with the legendary Kanazawa Hirokazu Sensei. He also regularly travels to many countries to teach karate, tai chi and bo-jutsu.

As I sat on a train in Tokyo early in the morning, crossing many bridges on my way to Narita Airport, I watched the sun rising in the east and the cherry blossoms coming into bloom just a little too late for me to enjoy the fullness of their spectacular annual pink and white decoration of Japan. Moving further from Tokyo, the rice paddies filled the spaces beside the train line. No land is wasted in Japan.

If you practise Shotokan Karate outside of Japan, you owe a debt to the pioneers that brought it to the world. (In fact, if you practise any other style of karate you probably still owe those pioneers some gratitude.)
