I was asked recently to teach a series of self-defence classes in a girls high-school. Initially, I was very reluctant, because I have felt for a long time that a six-week course in anything is useless unless you are going to keep using the skills you learn. For a self-defence course, there is a huge additional risk that people will develop a false sense of confidence which could get them into more trouble than if they never took a class at all.
